MMO Monday – AFK All Day

It`s Monday again and you know what that means. It`s time for another edition of MMO Monday! I had hoped to have a nice amount of things to post about today, however my in game time this week was cut to the bare minimum. On top of that my regular raid night was switched to tonight so there`s sadly not much to talk about.

Tonight we will be burning our way through the new operation. If we finish in good time we will be popping over to Karagga`s Palace and do a quick Nightmare mode run of that place as well. I`m hoping the final boss droids the vanity pet, since it would make an excellent addition to my growing collection.

Speaking of which, this week brought in the legacy pet Tauntaun Ram. Which was awarded to any player with an active account as of specific date in April.

Look at the little adorable guy! Here`s hoping that next week I will have more to talk about.

MMO Monday

Ah Monday. The bane of my existence. The first day of the work week (not that I work but that’s a minor detail) and the day that most people grumble about. There’s a number of other reasons to dislike Monday, it’s the day you go back to school after the weekend, it’s the only day of the week that starts with ‘M’ and well, okay I’ve run out of reasons so I’m grabbing at straws here. I don’t know many people who like Monday’s, but to those of you who do, bravo for liking this terrible day. Monday’s make me think of the movie Office Space, where that lady would say “Sounds like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays.”

Yeah, that’s the line. It brings a slight smile to my face to see that. Though at the same time I shudder just thinking about being stuck working with someone like that. Ah the joys of being unemployed, get to avoid people just like that woman.

Now! To the entire point behind this post. So we’ve established that I I don’t like Monday’s. So to make the day a bit more tolerable I have decided to do an MMO related post each Monday. I live to play MMO’s and since I spend most (read that as all) my time playing Star Wars: The Old Republic I know I will have plenty to talk about each Monday.

This last week of in game time has been mostly devoted to the World Event they added regarding the Rakghoul plague. It has added a new set of dailies that will, likely tomorrow be removed from the game, so I’ve been busy doing those on my two higher level characters on top of running raids and doing other regular dailies. It’s been fun to see this new addition and I look forward to either a continuation of this event or new world events in the future.

However, even greater thing that I accomplished was obtained four new in game vanity pets. Two are linked to the world event, one took a trip to eBay to acquire an the other took twenty-four hours of sitting in a nest waiting for the item to spawn in. The two raklings fro the event were decently easy to obtain. One was a reward from a quest that had me go all over Tatooine scanning ship parts. While the second was bought with DNA samples that are obtained from doing the new dailies. The eBay related pet was the Taun Fawn that is exclusive to PAX East people. However due to some people gaining multiples and others looking for a profit I was able to purchase the code for a small chunk of change. The fourth and final pet I obtained was the Orokeet. This bird is gained when you gather an egg from a nest on Alderaan then hatch it in the Tatooine desert. Call me crazy for sitting in the nest for 24 hours trying to get it but I think it was well worth the time and effort. There are actually several other Tauntaun vanity pets in game, and I’m working on obtaining them as well however those will take some time to do. I will update you whenever they are finally added to my collection.

Crimson Rakling, Pale Rakling, Orokee and Taun Fawn.

On top of my pet collection being started I have also been working on a number of lower level characters. My Jedi Shadow is doing well, at nearly thirty-six. A new Empire side alt was made who I’m leveling up with a friend from my Troopers guide, and that Sith Marauder is currently sitting at level sixteen. I still don’t enjoy leveling alts as much as some people do, but I must admit that the different class stories certainly make it much more enjoyable. I do any of them will hit fifty anytime soon, but honestly I’m in no rush to get a second max level character. Would only mean more raiding to do and I already run operations four to six nights a week as is on my Trooper. Nope, it’s best to keep it slow and enjoy leveling them when I feel like it.

Do You Hear The Crickets?

Seems I’ve gone and started a cricket farm without even realizing it. I turn my back on this blog for five minutes, or was it a month or two, and they are everywhere! Need to do some cleaning and find these critters and new home. Well, perhaps I will keep one or two just for fun. I mean, look at them, aren’t they the cutest little crickets that you’re ever seen.

In all seriousness I am a terrible blog owner. I have not abandoned this place, nor will I ever, it’s just that a got a little (read that as a lot) distracted and then time kind of just slipped away on me. Between being eaten by Star Wars: The Old Republic, my one computer dying (which of course is the computer I use to write this blog on) and countless other distractions, this blog got temporarily shelved. However I’m back and looking forward to continuing to work on this. I will still be decently distracted by SW:TOR as the game eats a lot of my time, but I will be trying to post somewhat regularly again. Might even do a few posts regarding my progress in the game.

So bare with me a few moments while I clean out the dust, shoo away the crickets and get things rolling again.

Rants! In A Notebook

Allow me a moment to rant here. Now I realize that a lot of my posts so far have been some form of ranting or complaining, but isn’t it human nature to complain? We can’t go through life and never think ‘Darn today’s weather sucks’, ‘Look at that idiot driving while reading the newspaper’ or ‘Holy crap! They want almost four dollars for a loaf of bread!’. And those that say they never complain are clearly liars. Sorry people but I think that’s true.

Anyways, let’s get on with this. Firstly, I have terrible luck with vehicles. TERRIBLE luck. My first car was used when I got it, but served a newly licensed sixteen year old well for a while. My sister had it first and then it came to me when she moved out. It was fine for a while and then the problems started. The transmission went, the brakes went, the wiring went, I lost track of how many times the engine and other parts caught on fire. All in all it was a terrible vehicle. Though I missed the White Blur (that’s what it was nicknamed) when we got rid of it I was also glad to see it go. Let someone else deal with it’s problems.

Irony of it was, the car was totaled only three weeks after it was sold to a family friend. The guy was fine but the car was a lost cause. So the White Blur died her glorious death and I moved on to car number two.

Car two was, oddly enough, also previously owned by my sister. I know what you’re thinking, maybe it was my sister that gave me crappy cars. While that could be argued that yes that was the case, I really don’t think it was. I mean, the both cars were running fine when ownership was passed over to me. I kept up with regular oil changes and other needed works, yet the cars always seemed to have bad things happen to them. So car number two served me quite well for the first year, can’t recall any major problems with it at that point. But then I moved up North and the problems started piling up. The windows either didn’t roll down or they wouldn’t roll up correctly, the radio went, the truck leaked, the battery died and this was only the beginning.

The first winter up here the car died in the cold, all the boosts in the world couldn’t keep it running more than a day. So it was fated to sit dead in the driveway until spring came around and it could be towed to the shop. The shop would fix it, I would drive it for a few weeks then something else would go wrong. That would get fixed and then next thing you know winter was here again. Winter once again meant a dead car. This process repeated itself for four years. If it wasn’t for having access to my husbands truck some days I probably would have gone crazy.

So last summer we decided it was time to get rid of car number two. It was pushing thirteen years old and was having electrical problems that no shop could fix. All the diagnostics said there was nothing yet the car would never start. I would have settled for another used car, but my husband insisted on getting me a brand new. That way if anything went wrong it would be under warranty. We shopped around for a bit and I found the vehicle that was right for me. A nice little Chevrolet Colorada truck. I’ve always wanted a truck, so after two cars I had to have a truck this time. We bought the truck back in August and bid farewell to car number two.

The truck has been great. I was super fortunate to have a new vehicle. New generally means very few if not no problems. That was the case until about two weeks ago, when the truck wouldn’t start. We figured it was probably the cold that killed the battery. It certainly wouldn’t have been the first time the cold killed a battery up here and doubtful it will be the last. But boosting it did nothing.

The problem with having a vehicle that is under warranty is that it has to be taken to the dealership, or else the parts and labor done at any other shop aren’t covered by the warranty and in some cases will void the remainder of the warranty. So I called up my dealer, who is an hour away, and told them what was happening. They made an appointment for it and the tow truck was called. They said they would be out later that day. Mother nature was against that. It snowed, a lot. The highway was shut down for an entire day. There’s only one highway up here and no alternate route. So they had to delay getting it. Another day, and more snow fell. Day three, more snow. Day four, snowing like bloody crazy to the point they were in a white out. This is another reason I hate winter, you can’t get anything done. We are now sitting at day five of the tow truck waiting game. Will they come today? I hope so. Will it be delayed once more? Knowing my luck it will be.

Have you ever had bad experiences with vehicles? I think we likely all have, but some of us are worse off than others.

Versatile Blogger Award

A strange and wonderful happened a few days ago. What was it? Well my blog got nominated for the Versatile Blogger Award. First off I was shocked. Never in a million years did I think my blog would ever get that award. Hell normally well before this point I would have abandoned it for a number of reasons, yet somehow I managed to stick with this one and now I have been greatly rewarded for it. And before I forget about it, a big thanks to Whitney Carter for the nomination.

And now to pass on the award to a few blogs that I think deserve it. The rules say to pick 15 blogs but honestly I’m not sure I can find that many, so we will see what happens.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch… – The pictures posted are always breathtaking, the stories written are beautiful and hilarious, and a blog about ranching is just too amazing to not award.

Kristen Lamb’s Blog – With a good dose of writing tips, a dash of humor and plenty of other things going for it this blog is a good read for just about everyone.

To All Those Rats We Loved Before – A small blog about a rat rescue operation in New Mexico. Shares stories about rats rescued and some tips for current and future rat owners.

Marcy Kennedy – Writing tips, helpful posts, tons of guest posts and an all around pleasure to read.

DeeScribewriting – Good advice from a childrens and YA author.

Honesty – A romance novel posted on a blog. Not normally a fan of romance however they did a great job of getting my attention and I look forward to the latest section to be posted.

Novel Journeys – Plenty of good book reviews that make book buying decisions a bit easier.

Rach Writes – The Platform-Building Campaign is a huge part of the reason I keep track of this blog. Lots of good guest posts and advice as well.

My Parents Are Crazier Than Yours – A hilarious read. The endless stories about how crazy her parents are keep my amused for hours

Okay so that’s not quite fifteen but it’s close! There are some other blogs I have seen in the recent past that I really liked but like an idiot I did not follow or bookmark them so I have no way of finding them now. Alright, on to the next part. Sharing a few things about myself.

  1. I hate winter. HATE winter.
  2. I am a highly skilled procrastinator.
  3. My fear of spiders is quite extreme.
  4. I spend far too many hours in front of the computer and on the net. It’s a sad, yet amusing addiction.
  5. Distractions come far too easily to me (took me two days to do this post due to distractions).
  6. I have bought more books than I will likely ever read and am always looking for more.
  7. I have officially, as of yesterday, reach level 50 in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Yes this is an important thing to know! Don’t look at me like that!

Another One of Those Days

Oh yes, it was one of those days today. The type of day where everything went wrong and just what I thought it would get better more things went wrong. It all started with waking up late, not necessarily a bad thing some days, but today it was. This resulted in a moment of panic and then rushing around like a chicken with it’s head cut off to get my son up and ready. Today was one of his three daycare days, and I had all of fifteen minutes to get him and myself ready and out the door to get there on time. So after quickly getting him dressed, grabbing him some breakfast I bundled up and headed outside to get the truck warmed up. With the windchill it was it was close to -30 Celsius so I wanted to make sure the truck was somewhat warm before we left. I just inside the truck, stick the key in the ignition and…

Tick, tick, tick.

This is the sound I am greeted with. Of course it wouldn’t start. Why would it? It’s okay, I tell myself and give the key another turn. Tick, tick, tick. Well now I’m mad. He wasn’t at daycare yesterday because he was feeling a bit sick so I had kept him home. Needless to say I was looking forward to having a few hours to myself to catch up on a few things. Let’s try this one more time. Nope, same result. So, after a few choice words, I climb out of the truck and head back inside. “Change of plans, it’s a house day.” I tell him as I shed off the multiple layers of clothes. He doesn’t seem too disappointed at the prospect of staying home and playing with his toys and watching TV.

After warming up I settled down in front of the computer. Only to find out that today was the day the SOPA/PIPA protests were happening on multiple sites. I didn’t necessarily need to look up anything on Google or Wiki, but sometimes when I get bored I just look up things randomly and without those sites it certainly put a damper on things. So with a slight lack of internet access I mulled around for a while, trying to do stuff but just no longer in the mood. That’s when I decide to go and play some Old Repubic for a bit. Log in and then see that there’s a patch to download first. That’s okay, patches are generally a good thing. They fix bugs, add new content, fix abilities that may not be working as intended. So I was okay with this. After a quick download I pop into game for a bit so I can at least do my dailies.

It was a few hours later before my husband came home from work. I had emailed him to let him know about my truck so that when he got home he would park in front of it so we could boost it. Last time the truck wouldn’t start about two weeks ago we just gave it a quick boost and it was fine. So I bundle up once more, head outside, hook up the jumper cables, hop in the truck, turn the key and… Tick, tick, tick. Well now I’m just really annoyed. We try two more times before deciding to give up. It ain’t starting. Once again I head inside to warm up. Now more than ever I need to log into Old Republic and go on a killing spree. Let me tell you, it’s a great way to relieve stress some days. Turn on my gaming computer, log into Old Republic and…wait a second…the servers are down for maintenance! And they won’t be back up until 11AM tomorrow!

This has not been my day. And so, I will end the night with a movie. I’m undecided whether it will be a Western or one of the Police Academy movies, but it seems to be my only option for entertainment tonight. Or perhaps I should do some writing. Oddly enough I do some of my best novel writing when I’m frustrated.

Winter Sports Are…Fun?

I am not much of a fan of winter these days. The cold, the snow and ice, the terrible driving conditions, it’s all quite unappealing. Yet when I was a kid I absolutely loved winter. Lots of snow meant the schools would be closed and I would get to stay home all day. I could built snowmen, snow forts, snow angels, have snow ball fights and I even enjoyed helping my dad shovel the driveway. I could spend hours outside in the freezing temperature and never realize or complain that I was cold. Certainly when I came inside and shed all those extra layers I would suddenly realize that I was near frozen and swear that I had frostbite over every inch of my body. But I none the less I loved winter.

Now the thought of having to bundle up just so that I can go spend thirty minutes scrapping off the windshield of my truck makes me shudder. The thought of stepping out into temperatures dipping as low as -35C makes me never want to leave my nice warm bed. The idea of driving on snow and ice covered roads along side people who just don’t understand that winter driving means you don’t still go 100km/h if terrifying. However the most disturbing thought, at least to me, is the idea of winter sports.

I understand the need for exercise and that winter limits the number of outdoor activities one can often do. Many sports just can’t be played during the winter months unless there happens to be an indoor version of it, an example would be indoor soccer. Yet most cease to exist until the snow melts away to reveal spring once more. So to me, the idea of going out skiing is certainly not on my priority list. Why put yourself through that? Sure, skiing is probably fun to some people, but I can think of much better ways to spend my time in the winter that traveling at high rates of speed down the side of a mountain. What happens if you fall? Well there will be tumbling and sliding and possibly crashing into trees. Whenever you do come to a stop you will be lying in, if not covered, in snow, with a probability of being injured.

Sledding is another winter sport, though more fun that actual sport. I used to go sledding as a kid and it was great, these days not so much. Sledding can have similar side effects as skiing. I have crashed while sledding before, and let me tell you, it was not fun. Having snow end up in places snow should never be just because you tumbled down and hill and ended up half buried under your sled, definitely not fun. Though to me the worst part of sledding is having to drag your sled back up to the top of the hill each time. Sure it’s not that bad the first time, but every trip after that it gets harder and harder until eventually your legs just won’t work anymore. Great way to tire out the kids, but that’s about it.

Curling, while played indoors and therefore could be played year round, is a winter sport. I have touched on curling in the past and explained my extreme dislike for the game. It’s slow, it’s boring and I really just don’t get it. I have had people try to explain it to me several times and it’s just one of those sports that I will never understand nor will I ever know why people enjoy playing it. Hey guys it’s freezing cold outside, why don’t we head on down to the curling rink for a few hours and slide a bunch of rocks down ice! Gee that sounds swell! No thanks, I would rather watch paint dry, literally.

There are other winter sports and activities out there but in the end they would all have similar reasons why I don’t understand how they are fun. For those of you who do participate and enjoy winter sports then I say bravo. However unless you have a horrific spill while skiing that ends up on YouTube then I will watch these sports, not will I participate in them. I, for one, will spend the duration of winter staying inside as often as possible and dreaming of the day when spring finally returns.

First Guest Post Appearance

Today is an exciting day. For today is the day that my guest post over at a friends blog goes live. This is in fact the first guest post I have ever done so I may be a bit extra excited about the whole prospect of it. Doing this has always prompted me to try to put more effort into my own blog. So here’s hoping that you will see more activity around here in the coming days, weeks and months.

For now I will prompt you to go visit her blog and check out my post on why I think Star Wars: The Old Republic is the best MMO out there.

New Years, Net Issues And MMO’s

Things have been quiet here, too quiet. I’m partially to blame for that. The other reason is a plethora of internet connection issues that have been plaguing me for the past month. If I don’t wake up to no internet then it flickers in and out all day long. Sometimes it’s out for large chunks of times, others it’s just long enough to interrupt what I had been trying to do. On top of that my main computer was having some issues the other day. They have since been solved but it certain made December the month from hell technology wise. Here’s hoping that with the new year these issues will be a thing of the past and I can get back to my regular net schedule.

In other news not much has happened here. Sad but true. Part of living in the middle of no where I suppose. I have, however, been sucked into the virtual world of gaming since mid December. Star Wars: The Old Republic eats pretty much all of my free time, and some of my other time as well. It’s worth it. I am thoroughly enjoying the game and it has renewed my love of MMO’s. After half of a month I have managed to level two characters to the mid to high thirties. My Jedi Knight Sentinel is currently at level thirty five and my Trooper Commando is sitting at thirty seven, though she will likely be thirty eight by the end of the knight. I have also been dabbling in the dark side of things. My Sith Marauder has reached level ten and my Imperial Agent is sitting at a whopping level three, granted I did just make her so I haven’t had much of a chance to work on her leveling.

For the moment my concentration is on my Commando. The class is incredibly enjoyable to play and I have to say their story line is pretty interesting. Not saying that the Jedi Knight story line isn’t interesting, but the Commando certainly won me over. The big gun helped. My plan is to get here to level fifty first then slowly work on my Knight and other characters as well. I hope to have more updates in the future on what I am doing both in and out of game. Also, that guest post I mentioned I was doing should happen sometime this month so I will be sure to give an update when it goes live.

Christmas Baking…Pilsbury Style

Ah the holidays. The time when baked goods show up in every home, when people get together to celebrate and insane line ups dot almost every store there is. Yup, there is nothing like the holidays. The smell of freshly baked cookies filling the house is always a welcome thing. However for those of us who can’t bake to save our lives the holidays can be a daunting thing. We all know the need/want of cookies, pies and other baked goods. I am one of those people. The kitchen and myself have never gotten along. So when my son asks for cookies I feel a lump forming in my throat, my heart beats a bit faster and my palms get sweaty. Wait. You want me to make cookies? I try not to look frightened at the prospect. I do enjoy cookies just like everyone else but why do I have to make them?

And yet, there is hope for me! There is a way my son can get the cookies he wants and have me back them as well. Enter the Pilsbury dough boy. Ah yes, thanks to this little happy chunk of dough even I can make cookies that taste just as good as homemade. So with a quick run to the store I stock up on various types of cookies. Flip on the over, place dough on cookie trays, pop them in the over and voila! Ten minutes later I have made cookies. Boy don’t I feel like the best mom ever. I just made my son cookies when only a short while ago I was having a panic attack thinking about doing that exact thing.

Now with my confidence boosted I continue to bake and bake. Now we have tree cookies, snow men cookies, gingerbread cookies and last but not least sugar cookies. The best part is, very little mess compared to making them from scratch. I just simply throw out the packaging, clean the cookie trays and stand back to admire my work. Oh yes, I can bake cookies. Of course the real challenge now is making the cookies last. I know once we start eating them they will disappear faster than anything. I suppose that if worse come to worse I can always go and buy more. For as long as the store is stocked up with Pilsbury products I can bake to my hearts content, or at least bake without having a heart attack.
